Why the X3 M50?

I’ve been eyeing the BMW X3 M50 for a while. As BMW’s best-selling model — reportedly moving close to 1,000 units a day globally at its peak — the X3 has always been the brand’s all-rounder. But the 2026 generation takes things to a new level with a bold new design language BMW calls “monolithic,” a more powerful upgraded powertrain, and the latest iDrive 9 system.

The M50 sits at the top of the X3 lineup, packing a 3.0-liter M TwinPower Turbo inline-6 paired with 48V mild-hybrid tech that adds up to 17 hp at low speeds. That totals 440 hp and a 0–60 time of just 4.4 seconds. In an SUV. It’s wild.

“Day after day, trip after trip, they deliver. No matter your ask or what the weather delivers, they seem to excel.”

The exterior: dark, menacing, and absolutely right

Midnight Black Metallic was an easy choice. On this generation of X3, with its bold new “monolithic” design language, black doesn’t just suit the car — it completes it.

The BMW Iconic Glow Kidney Grille with contour lighting absolutely pops against the dark bodywork at night. The double-light signature headlights and dynamic light carpet look dramatic in a way that brighter colors simply can’t match.

The quad exhaust pipes, the M-specific aerodynamic components, and the 21-inch bi-color wheels with their openwork design all read as sinister in the best possible way when wrapped in black.

If the M Sport Professional Package’s dark accents were made for any color, it’s this one.

Inside: tech-forward with some trade-offs

The cabin centres around a large, curved display running BMW’s iDrive 9, and I’m happy to report it’s fast and responsive — almost smartphone-like in speed and fluidity.

BMW kept the iDrive controller too, which is a win for those of us who prefer not to poke at a touchscreen every time we change the temperature. The M Sport steering wheel with its flat bottom looks purposeful and makes getting in and out easier.

The M-coloured Alcantara seat trim and tricolor stitching give the interior a genuine performance feel. Against a dark exterior, the ambient lighting inside feels especially striking — it creates a real cockpit atmosphere at night.

The seats are well worth mentioning too: supportive over long hauls, with enough bolstering to keep you planted when you push it.

How it drives

BMW built this car around three distinct modes, and they’ve done a remarkable job making each feel genuinely different:

COMF

Comfort mode

Light, accurate steering, progressive throttle, and an impressively quiet cabin. Perfect for the daily commute.

SPRT

Sport mode

Steering builds weight, throttle mapping gets aggressive, the 8-speed holds gears longer. Body roll noticeably reduced.

S+

Sport Plus

Gearbox is near-telepathic on downshifts. Chassis stays remarkably flat through corners. Closest thing to a track-ready SUV.

AWD

xDrive AWD

Rear-biased all-wheel drive feels invisible in everyday driving but delivers real confidence when conditions demand it.

The Adaptive M Suspension is the glue that holds it all together. Even in Sport Plus, the ride never becomes harsh — tuned for the real world, which makes it endlessly livable as a daily driver.

Driver assistance & safety

The X3 M50 comes with a strong suite of standard safety tech: blind spot warning, lane departure warning, enhanced emergency braking, active lane change, active cruise control with traffic light recognition, backup camera, and hands-free smart entry.

The Driving Assistance Pro Package adds hands-free driving up to 40 mph, and an emergency SOS system is standard. Wireless phone charging is included too.

Final thoughts

The 2025 BMW X3 M50 isn’t a perfect vehicle — no car is. But as an overall package it’s pretty darn difficult to beat.

Weekday commutes, weekend canyon runs, hauling the family around — it handles all of it with confidence and composure that few rivals match. And in Midnight Black? It looks the part every single time you walk up to it.

If you told me a few years ago I’d be driving an SUV that does 0–60 in 4.4 seconds and turns heads in a parking lot, I might not have believed you. But here we iz....

I am loving Der kleine Panzerwagen!
