There's a certain aesthetic appeal to a minimalist motorcycle. Fewer parts, cleaner lines, less stuff hanging off the back end.
On adventure bikes especially - where functionality is supposed to be king - this philosophy seems reasonable: strip away the ornamental, keep what matters.
The fender eliminator kit is the gateway drug to this line of thinking.
And in my humble opinion, it's a real bad investment, at least for the 2025 KLR 650 ABS Adventure.
Let me explain why, with all the paranoid detail you've come to expect.
I ordered one of these kits from Amazon the other day and it arrived with zero instructions on how to install the bloody thing.
About as useful as tits on a bull was my immediate reaction to that factoid.
On request they send me the YouTube video link for the Tusk fender eliminator kit? but that does not come with LED indicators like the Amazon Chinese kit does?? You get the broad idea though but no actual solution for the LED indicators relay problem as the Tusk kit does not come with LED indicator stalks.
Several folks on the Amazon site claim they just installed this kit without a need for any instructions (yeah, right) but you have to dismantle the entire rear end, luggage rails, passenger grab rails, seat, side covers and rip off the original brake light and the license plate light first and when you look at what they are proposing you will be getting a lot of mud and spray all over your electrics, electronics and under your seat as they do not supply a plastic cover to protect against mud and sand spray et al.
A clear indicator the customer comments about the product on Amazon are all bot based BS.
Apart from that irk, all this combined bits and bobs removal on the Gen 3 Adventure ABS models is actually quite a lot of hassle and there is new electrical wiring, cutting and heat gun action thrown in here as well to get the job done.
The kit also has no words on that shit.
Oh, and a new relay for the LED stalks at the back will be required too. The front remains bulbs if you go this way (tres stupido!).
I was just not prepared to give up the protection the stock Kawasaki fender offers either.
I pulled it all apart, looked at it, blinked a few times and thought about it, looked at some YouTube videos and then put it all back together ASAP, STAT!
For me it is a definite no bueno option. Actually, my exact thought on it all was, "you can't be fecking serious".
For those of you with a wish to proceed regardless of the utter futility of the exercise, here is what you are looking at..

Let's be honest about the appeal first. The stock KLR fender is not actually a design masterpiece from an optical pov.
Kawasaki coulda done a better job of this rear fender with a whole lot less plastic, but it is a minor point when you weigh up all the pros and cons here.
It's functional, modular, and built to last - which means it looks a tad agricultural. A chunky piece of plastic that screams "working bike, not boutique bike."
An eliminator kit promises to fix that: clean up the rear profile, make the bike look lighter and tighter, and give you a platform for a custom license plate mount that doesn't look like a '90s internet forum retrofit job.
I get it. The aesthetic argument is real. As long as you never go near dirt, sand, rain or mud...
The problem here is that aesthetics are almost the only argument, and the downsides are real, numerous, and will compound over time.
The Problems, in Escalating Order of Annoyance
1. Mud and Spray: The Everyday Tax
This is the non-negotiable one. The KLR's stock fender exists for a reason—it's long, and it sits high enough to catch spray and mud before it reaches you or your passenger.
Remove it, and you're now a mud magnet.
On pavement, this means road spray directly onto your riding gear, backpack, and anything mounted on the bike.
On gravel or dirt (which the "Adventure ABS" trim explicitly invites you to use), the spray pattern is even worse.
If you ever ride with a passenger, they get a direct shower of whatever the rear wheel throws up.
By mid-ride on anything off-pavement, you'll look like you've been mud-wrestling an angry rhinoceros.
Is this dangerous? Not directly. But it's frelling annoying, it accelerates wear on gear and luggage, and it makes the riding experience measurably worse - which is the exact opposite of what an adventure bike should do.
2. License Plate Mounting: The Engineering Challenge
The eliminator kits come with mounting solutions for the rear license plate. They are, almost universally, underwhelming.
You have three pretty bad options:
A side-mounted bracket that looks like a band-aid solution
An under-tail mount that either vibrates loose or requires you to be a contortionist to service the rear wheel
A bracket that blocks visibility of the taillight or turn signals (looking at you, some brand-name kits)
The factory fender has a purpose-built mounting point. It's not pretty, but hey, it works!
The eliminator solution is almost always a compromise that trades reliability for aesthetics. Fine if you are tooling around town and rarely go on the freeway or a dirt road, a la Super-Moto poser.
And if your state has any vibration standards or enforcement (California does), and that license plate starts rattling at highway speeds, you're inviting a lot of CHP hassle if they actually look at your bike closely.
3. Electrical Complexity and Dust Ingress
Here's where my paranoia gets justified: connectors and electrical runs live behind that fender.
The stock fender protects the brake light wiring, connectors, and various sensor harnesses from road spray, dirt, and water. Remove it, and these components are now exposed to:
Direct water spray from the rear wheel
Mud and grit accumulation during off-road use
Salt spray if you're anywhere near a coast (My NorCal riding range includes Highway one beach strips, ADV routes and various farming road offshoots off the Highway 160 farming areas all the way up to Sacramento, Fresno and Ukiah).
UV exposure that degrades connector plastic over time
You're not going to see immediate failures.
But over two or three seasons, especially if you actually use the "Adventure" part of your ABS Adventure, you're setting yourself up for corrosion issues, intermittent electrical gremlins, or a connector failure at an inconvenient moment.
That brake light connector didn't fail by accident—it failed because it lived its entire life in the rain and a spray of dirt.
By the way you are ripping off the big red brake light and license plate lighting bits and rubber grommets from your OEM fender and transferring them to your new setup if you do this, so there is a lot of new wiring and grommet wrestling you have to get into here as well.
4. The Tail Tidy Multiplier Effect
If you're the type to run an after-market tail tidy (and many KLR owners are - see: Elkisinis LED integrations on Amazon), the fender eliminator kit creates a layering problem.
Now you've got:
An eliminator kit
A tail tidy mounted to it
Custom lighting wiring routed through both
A license plate mount that has to coexist with all of this
LED indicators that need a relay and more wiring conversion they do not tell you how to execute - the Gen 3 KLR'S still come with bulb indicators - this is not a plug and play conversion
Exposed electrics and electronics - ripe and ready for downstream failures that will come
Each component interferes with the next. Vibration from the engine and road compounds down the chain. Hyper-flash issues become harder to diagnose. Cable management becomes a Tetris puzzle. Corrossion is now a guaranteed fact of life..
The integrations that work cleanly on a stock fender become a rats' nest of bad compromises.
5. Maintenance Access and Durability
The KLR's stock fender is designed to be removed easily for rear wheel service. The mounting points are solid, the fasteners are accessible, and you can pull the whole thing off in under five minutes.
Most of these Gen 3 KLR Fender kits do not get in the way of the rear wheel removal at all but on some bikes it is a real hassle.
I tried it on my last bike, a 2009 Buell Odyssey and it was a pretty big disaster.
Most eliminator kits are bolted directly to the frame or subframe. This means:
They're permanent (or nearly so)
They take the vibration and flex of the frame directly
Replacement becomes a bigger job if the kit cracks or deteriorates
Rear wheel removal now requires disassembly of your custom mounting setup
If you're traveling in Africa or any such challenging remote areas (like California ag roads) or even just dealing with a roadside flat - the KLR's modular design is a feature, not a bug.
The Specific Case of the 2025 KLR 650 ABS Adventure
Kawasaki positioned this trim explicitly as an adventure platform. The ABS system, the ride height, the optional luggage - all of it points toward actual off-road capability and travel.
An eliminator kit is a choice that says "I want the bike to look more adventurous, not to be more adventurous." That's fine if you know that's what you're doing, but don't fool yourself: you're trading real functionality for aesthetics on a bike designed for function.
The irony is sharp: the stock fender is proof that Kawasaki designed this bike for actual use, not Instagram posers.
Removing it is saying you disagree with that engineering decision, this would be a poor decision - IPSO FACTO.
What I'd Do Instead
If the aesthetic bothers you, options:
Keep the fender and wrap or paint it to match a custom scheme. This costs less than a quality eliminator kit and solves nothing—it's pure aesthetics, honestly acknowledged.
Accept that adventure bikes look agricultural. The KLR isn't supposed to be pretty. It's supposed to work. That plastic fender has crossed multiple continents and survived things that would destroy prettier bikes.
If you really need modern lines, consider the next-generation platform. Kawasaki's future adventure bikes will presumably look more contemporary. You're riding a 20-year-old retro design (in spirit). That's not a bug; it's a feature of how proven and reliable the platform is. Look at the KLE500 which is actually a 450. Even better look at the new BMW GSA450 when they start pouring in to BMW shops.
The Bottom Line
The fender eliminator kit solves an aesthetic problem at the cost of practical, durability, and maintenance access problems.
On a 50/50 street/dirt adventure bike that actually hits the dirt, that trade-off doesn't pencil out, so just Fuhgetabout it if you want fewer problems down the road!
If you are a sado-Masochist, you do you! You will be pleased, I guarantee it!
Marvin doesn't do "fashionable." Marvin does ultra-reliable.
Added to which, the factory fender is more reliable than any kit I've ever seen, especially if you're planning actual adventure miles.
Keep the OEM fender if you are gonna do some real adventure riding.
Use the money on something that matters - better tires, better suspension tuning, a quality luggage system, or just more fuel to actually ride the damn bike.
Your future self, covered in mud but with functional working electronics, will thank you.
